GIO Moda Dark Blue & White Decoria
MODA by GIO

We have the blues, but not just any blues. It’s Navy Blue in particular that’s having a special moment in interior design. To be sure, though, navy blue isn’t just a trend; it’s truly a timeless color that never really goes out of style. But it’s safe to say that this quintessentially classic color is a hot pick for both residential and commercial interiors these days. Here’s what you need to know about navy blue.

History of Navy Blue

Navy blue got its name from the uniforms of the British Royal Navy. This dark, almost black, blue has been been worn by British naval officers since 1748 and has since been adopted by other navies world wide. When this color name taken from sailors’ uniforms first came into use, it was called marine blue, but soon became navy blue.  Navy is the color of trustworthiness and authority and conveys importance, confidence, power.

Navy Blue Today

While the dark blue of naval uniforms from the early days was a blue shade very near to black, actual blue uniforms of our modern U.S. Navy and other navies have become outright black in color in order to combat fading. But sailors’ uniforms aside, in fashion and interiors today, there are also shades of navy that are a bit “bluer.”

Navy Blue in Interior Design

Like many colors popular in interior design, navy blue has its roots in fashion. Navy has long been a fashion favorite because it’s a universally flattering shade that’s a great alternative to black. Thanks to its strong nautical association, navy used in interior decoration continues to evoke images of the oceanside, making it a very tranquil and relaxing hue. Navy is also very versatile and works well as a neutral or an accent. And just like with fashion, navy is a great substitute for black in interiors. As a base color or foundation, navy is elegant; as an accent, navy can be just the thing to add intensity.

Here’s one of our newest wood look collections, Harmony in Blue, that demonstrates how dazzling, yet at the same time grounding, navy blue can be.
