A Brief History of Zellige Tile, and Its Modern Interpretation
Zellige (also spelled zellij or zillij and pronounced “zee-LEEJE”) is a glazed Moroccan tile with a long and influential history. While it has gained renewed attention in recent years, zellige is anything but new. Fragments of early zellige tilework have been discovered in Tunisia, possibly dating back to the mid-10th to mid-11th centuries, suggesting the technique originated in the western Islamic world during that period.
Traditional zellige-making is considered an art form. Master artisans pass the craft down through generations, often beginning training in childhood. Apprenticeships can last a decade or more. Authentic zellige tiles are made by hand from unrefined clay sourced near Fez, Morocco. The clay is pressed into molds, dried, hand-shaped with a hammer, and finished with enamel glazing applied only to the face of each tile.
The result is a surface defined by natural variation, light reflection, and unmistakable character—qualities that continue to influence contemporary tile design.

What Makes Authentic Zellige Tiles Tricky For Commercial Spaces
Authentic zellige tiles are visually striking, but their handmade nature can present challenges in commercial applications. Because each tile is hand-cut, surfaces are inherently uneven. Edges may protrude slightly, making surfaces more difficult to clean and maintain—particularly in environments with frequent use or moisture exposure.
Installation presents additional hurdles. Traditional zellige installations are typically butt-jointed, with no visible grout. Achieving that look requires highly skilled installers with specific experience working with irregular handmade tile. Labor costs can increase significantly, especially on large commercial projects.
Material cost is another consideration. Authentic zellige is one of Morocco’s most recognized art forms and is priced accordingly. Specifiers often account for additional overage—sometimes 20–25 percent—to allow for natural imperfections such as edge chips, surface pits, or glaze variation.
For commercial applications, especially where moisture is present, zellige tiles often require sealing to protect grout lines and surface irregularities. Periodic resealing may be needed over time.
Zellige-Inspired Tile in Contemporary Commercial Design
The appeal of zellige continues to influence commercial interiors, even as project requirements demand greater consistency, durability, and ease of installation. Zellige-inspired ceramic and porcelain tiles adapt the visual character of handmade Moroccan tile—gloss variation, light reflection, and surface irregularity—into formats better suited for commercial environments.
Manufactured for consistency, these tiles support predictable layouts, standard grout joints, and simplified installation. Durable finishes eliminate the need for sealing and allow for more straightforward long-term maintenance, making them appropriate for high-use commercial spaces.
These interpretations allow designers to reference the history and aesthetic of zellige while meeting practical commercial requirements for durability, cleanability, and consistency.
Getting the Look of Zellige Tiles Without the Problems
Zellige-inspired ceramic and porcelain tiles offer a practical way to achieve the visual character of handmade zellige while avoiding many of the installation, cost, and maintenance considerations associated with authentic tile. Designed for commercial environments, these tiles use consistent sizing and standard installation methods, with no sealing required and more predictable long-term performance.
GIO’s now offers four zellige inspired collections to give designers more flexibility in how they reference the look of traditional zellige in commercial spaces. Across the series, designers can choose options that range from quieter, more restrained surfaces to more expressive color and gloss effects—while maintaining the durability and consistency commercial projects require.
