“Innovation that rebels against itself, turning functionality into an interior decoration accessory.” ~ Francesco Bonami summarizing the design philosophy pursued by Gio Ponti

The creativity and ingenuity of Gio Ponti, architect and designer extraordinaire, was, and is, an inspiration to all of us here at GIO.  Considered a revolutionary in architecture and design, Ponti had his roots in the ceramics industry and remained involved in ceramics throughout his working life.  Everything Gio Ponti did was exuberant and design was a means of enjoying la dolce vita, the sweet life. Ponti established a clean and understated design aesthetic that transcended modern design trends while remaining relevant for the current day and age. The design philosophy and aesthetics of Gio Ponti were a driving force when we created our mission to bring better options, service and solutions to the commercial design sector.

The Gio Ponti Story

Born in Milan in 1891, Gio Ponti was one of the most important and influential Italian architects of the twentieth century. Also known as an important industrial designer, furniture designer, artist and publisher, Ponti is said to have revolutionized the worlds of architecture and design. Ponti was instrumental in developing Milan as center of fashion, design and architecture.

The “colored floors” for “Salzburger Nachtrichten” in Salzburg are a Gio Ponti contribution as late as 1976. Ponti died in 1979 at the age of 88.

After serving in the military in WWI, Gio Ponti earned a degree in architecture and took his first job with an Italian ceramics company, Richard-Ginori, serving as artistic director of this centuries-old company. Ponti was responsible for renovating their entire production output and collaborated with the company’s artisans to develop intricate, beautifully crafted, and sumptuously decorated ceramics. It is very possible that his early career in ceramics design influenced the rest of his career, and it is a fact that Ponti stayed involved with ceramics through design and specifications throughout the remainder of his working life.

And quite the working life it was. Gio Ponti was extraordinarily prolific, collaborating with over 100 companies, building in 13 countries, lecturing in 24 countries and producing 560 magazine issues (and writing at least one article for each!). He even spent his spare time creatively–indulging in painting and writing poetry. One can only wonder if Gio Ponti ever slept.

In the mid 1950’s, at the height of his career, Ponti (along with Pier Luigi Nervi and Arturo Danusso) earned the commission to design the Pirelli Tower, the second skyscraper built in Milan. This grand achievement was lauded internationally and Ponti was invited to collaborate on projects all over the world.

Other design projects Ponti later pursued included ceramic objects and beautiful glass bottles. He also designed furnishings under the name Domus Nova. Among his famous chair designs were the Superleggera and Distex.

Ponti also created a variety of lamps for companies, showcasing his diverse abilities by achieving distinct design goals for each project. One of the most famous lamps of this period is the Billia lamp which is well-known even today.

Gio Ponti’s work was innovative and unusually eclectic, reflecting the diverse, and often conflicting, styles and ideologies with which he experimented over the years.

Gio Ponti was not just a man who worked in design; he was a true artist whose talent and passion emanated from his core. It is through this legacy that Ponti continues to inspire new generations of artists and designers today.
