The current craze for chevron patterns on everything from small to medium-scale fabric prints, to large and over-scale floor and wall designs is still as strong as ever. A centuries-old design dating back to 1800 BC, the chevron has been on the forefront of modern design again and again since the Art Deco Movement in the 20s and 30s. The on-going popularity of this classic pattern with ancient roots makes it once a trend and a tradition.
Today, the sophisticated zigzag is notably popular, a by-product of the love for bold graphics and geometric forms, especially in interior design. While classic chevron patterns are still hot, the latest interpretations show the chevron taking on new looks, with less predictable versions of the classic design emerging as a fun way to add lively dimension to otherwise unassuming spaces. Modified chevrons put a twist on the traditional, turning up in designs with irregular spacing, erratic zigzags, ikat-style sketchy lines, and tone-on-tone colorations. Tile design is no exception, with exciting new chevron patterns appearing on floors, walls, and backsplashes with happy abandon.
Using contrasting colors in a chevron design creates a vibrant, even dramatic look. Here, our RETRO by GIO modified chevron is shown in three contrasting shades of grey.
Did You Know: Herringbone is a pattern similar to chevron, but instead of the ends lining up with one another, one end overlaps the edge of the other, creating a different overall effect. Click here for a visual on an earlier post we shared on this subject.
